Electrical Safety Tips to Prevent Fire Outbreaks

Did you know that many of the fires that occur in this country and in the other parts of the world start from electrical appliance malfunction, frayed cords, and overloaded sockets? Aside from flammable substances and kitchen hazards, electrical hazards are also the leading causes of fires both in the home and in the workplace. This is why electrical safety is a huge responsibility whether at home or in the office. Because proper use of electricity and electrical appliances can contribute significantly to home and workplace safety, be sure to remember these top tips at all times.

Electrical Appliances

Appliances including but are not limited to computers, lights, microwave, and television are an important part of homes and offices. Follow these safety precautions on the use of appliances to prevent the possibility of a fire accident.

• Unplug appliances when not in use. This will not only conserve energy but also reduce risks of a fire accident.

• Give sufficient clearance for appliances that generate heat. These include televisions, computers, electric stoves and so on. There should be a clearance of several inches around the appliance for sufficient air circulation and cooling. Avoid placing these appliances near flammable items like curtains and furnishing. Never drape clothes over warm appliances.

• Read product manual carefully before using any appliance. Follow instructions from this manual.

• Check appliances regularly. If there is any sign of defect, stop using the appliance immediately and bring it to a professional service center. Do not attempt to do the repair yourself.

Electrical Cords

Another thing that you should always check is the electrical cord. All your appliances come with cords and you need to ensure that they are kept in good condition for safe operation.

• Inspect cords regularly. See if there any frays, cracks, or kinks. Have the cords replaced immediately if you see any signs of wear and tear.

• Do not use cords for any other use. They should never be played with or used as clothesline or leash.

• Use tape or twist ties to secure cords into position. It is not recommended to staple or use nail cords to make them stay in place.

• Do not place cords under carpets and rugs.

• Minimize use of extension cords.

• Always use the correct weight and length of extension cord for the appliance.

Outlets and Sockets

Aside from the appliance and cord, you should also watch out for hazards involving electrical outlets. Keep the outlets safe by keeping these tips in mind.

• Cover unused outlets with a cover plates or childproof caps. Doing this will not only reduce fire risks but also prevent electrocution.

• Never overload sockets. As you know, overloaded outlets are some of the major causes of electrical fires. Relocate cords instead of overloading a single socket with multiple power strips or adaptors.

• Use a ground fault circuit interrupted outlets in areas like swimming pools, kitchens, and bathrooms.

Aside from following these electrical safety measures, it is also imperative that you equip your home or office with a reliable CO2 fire extinguisher, which is the safest to use for combating fires that involve electrical appliances and equipment.
